A printed poster has only a short time to communicate. The strongest designs make one message easy to notice, support it with the necessary details and give the viewer a clear next action.
Decide what the poster must achieve
Start with the audience, location and purpose. A poster promoting an event needs the event name, date, place and booking or contact route. A window offer may need a product, benefit, end date and one response method. If every detail receives equal emphasis, the viewer has no obvious place to begin.
Create a simple information hierarchy
Choose the first thing people should read, then arrange the supporting information in a natural order. A useful structure is a main headline, one short explanation, the practical details and a call to action. Remove repeated phrases and background information that does not help the decision.
Choose type for the real viewing distance
Typography should remain recognisable where the poster will actually be seen. Use a limited number of typefaces, give important wording enough size and avoid forcing long sentences into a small area. Decorative styles can add character, but essential information such as a date, venue or phone number should remain straightforward to read.
Use contrast and spacing
Text needs clear contrast against its background. Leave space around the headline, logo and contact details so they do not merge into one block. Check the design at its intended size; a layout that looks clear while enlarged on screen can become crowded when reduced.
Prepare artwork for the chosen size
Confirm the finished dimensions before finalising the layout. Supply the best available logo and image files, keep essential text away from trimmed edges and ask about the required bleed and file settings for the specific job. Image suitability depends on its quality and the final printed size.
