Most preventable print problems come from missing information, unsuitable artwork or details approved too quickly. Use this checklist before the job moves into production.
Confirm the product and finished size
Name the item being printed and confirm its final dimensions. A flyer, folded leaflet, booklet, poster and sign each needs different artwork preparation. Ask for the job-specific bleed, margin and file requirements before finalising the design.
Check quantities and versions
Confirm the total quantity and identify any different names, dates, language versions or branch details. Put version information in writing and use clear filenames so an old or incorrect file is not mistaken for the approved artwork.
Proofread the details that matter most
- names, dates, times and venue;
- phone numbers, email and web addresses;
- prices or offer terms supplied by the customer;
- spelling, punctuation and legal wording;
- the required call to action.
Read the proof at its expected printed size where practical. A second person should check important details before approval.
Supply suitable logos, images and fonts
Send the best original files available. Image suitability depends on its quality and final printed size. If a layout uses fonts that cannot be supplied, ask how the file should be prepared. Avoid copying small graphics from websites or screenshots when original artwork exists.
Check finishing and placement
Folds, trimming, binding, holes, fixings and other finishing can affect where important text should sit. Keep essential details away from edges and confirm the production specification rather than assuming one setting works for every product.
State the real deadline early
Provide the date the printed item must be in use. Artwork corrections, approval, stock, sourcing and finishing can affect turnaround. A deadline is not confirmed until the complete specification and artwork have been reviewed.
